Startlogic Review
Logic is always a great place to start, especially in the world of computers. I know it seems like the machines are sometimes organized by a will wholly bent on evil, but they are really constructs of pure logic. If you treat them right, they’ll behave predictably and do what you want every time. So, Startlogic would seem to have gotten that logical and reliability are the basis of a good hosting organization, but how well do they implement this knowledge in practice? Let’s take a look.
Startlogic has been around has been around since November of 2003 and currently hosts roughly 100,000 websites. The numbers demonstrate a respectable rate of growth, but in the world of server hosting services that can be either a good thing or a bad thing. Even if it indicates excellent service and the resulting positive word-of-mouth reputation, even the best companies sometimes go through growing pains if their customer base expands faster than their infrastructure allows.
This company provides a range of different levels of service to accommodate the needs of various types of users. One of the most comprehensive packages is the ProLogic plan that, for $5.95 a month offers unlimited disk space and bandwidth and e-mail accounts, a free domain registration as well as the capability to host an unlimited number of domains under one account. You will also be able to implement various software suites like PHP and Perl scripting and My SQL databases. There servers also support for streaming media using Flash and RealAudio formats.
If your needs are more modest, there is also a as PersonalLogic package that offers much of the same functionality at a cheaper rate, though with a couple of limitations like 60 GB of disk space and 600 GB of monthly transfer allowance. If you can fit into those limitations, the account will only cost you $3.95 a month, which is a good budget deal.
For those with more professional aspirations or demanding IT needs, the company also offers various VPS accounts. These start at $29.95 a month and move up to $39.95 and $49.95 a month depending on the amount of dedicated resources you need. The packages have scalable amount of dedicated memory in each, 128, 256 and 512 respectively. The amount of available disk space is 20, 40 and 60 GBs respectively. Keep in mind though that a Virtual Private Server is not the same thing as a dedicated server.
So, the company offers a bunch of different options to accommodate various needs, but how good is the service they actually deliver once you get past the features and pricing? Sadly, it seems, it’s pretty bad. Customers rate them well below average in terms of reliability, meaning your sites will be down much of the time. The problem is compounded by the fact that the company also offers poor customer service. The company claims to offer 24/7 phone tech support, but customers report that they are unhelpful at best, sometimes hang up on calls, and are subjected to 45 minute hold times. The creative losing of records has also caused some people to be stuck in contracts that they canceled. Startlogic also has an ex-customer-created attack site listing complaints and have a long record of problems registered by the Better Business Bureau. The company offers some good packages, but buyers beware.
