It used to be that a geek was someone who lived in their parent’s basement and had that bizarrely pale skin of someone who only gets light from a computer screen. But geeks are cool now. They are at the heart of industry, research and development projects and they make sure our online world keeps spinning. Far from the days of basement isolation, geeks are now leaders in terms of social and corporate responsibility. The webhosting company Green Geeks is a prime example of that fact.
Green Geeks purports to be the greenest green-hosting company in the world of green-hosting companies. Their goal goes beyond carbon-neutrality to the claim that they are actually 300% green. Like pretty much any other green hosting company out there, these geeks draw their power from the same electrical grid as everyone else. Their offices and server farms are not in fact located on top of an idyllic hillside amidst a wind farm, nor do they own a windmill. What they do, though, is insure that for every watt of power they take out of the grid, a green energy provider, whether a solar power or wind power company, puts the same amount of energy back into the system. Moreover, and this is what really sets them apart, they have them put that amount of energy back into the system three times over. That means, they say, that hosting with them not only minimizes your impact on the environment, it also actively improves the state of the world. That’s a pretty tall claim and, while the company’s website is a little short on the citation-supported facts department, they do submit to third party verification that you can check out.
Green is great, but it does of course matter that you get the services you’re signing up for and not just a warm fuzzy feeling in your stomach. With this company, the hosting package come with a range of features like unlimited disk space, transfer capacity and e-mail accounts. One free domain name registration is included with your account and you can also host any domain name you would like including add-on domains, subdomains and parked domains. You can setup an unlimited number of MySQL Databases on your servers as well. On top of these fundamental services you’ll also have access to a CGI library, anti-spam protection, the ability to use PHP or Perl scripts and to setup various streaming multimedia applications such as Flash.
Green Geeks has been around for a while. They note that their management team has over 40 years of experience… which either means that they have been in the webhosting business since before there was an Internet, or their team, collectively, has racked up 40 years worth of man hours in the IT industry. Probably that latter is correct Customer reports of the company’s services are generally positive, meaning they stand up well against other hosting companies, whether green or not. That means you get quality service and the ability to be environmentally responsible all for the reasonable price of $6.95 $4.95 per month. Green Geeks is definitely a good webhost to look into.
