“Hosting” is a big word. A lot of attention is paid to domain and webpage hosting, but there are a lot of other reasons you might want to look into hosting services. Many file sharing mechanisms out there revolve around decentralized databases, which is to say the transfers aren’t contingent on single servers. A torrent file, for example, can put you in contact with thousands of other users who have a given file or parts of a file. DC Hub Hosting, however, works slightly differently.
The “DC” in “DC Hub Hosting” refers to “Direct Connect” which is both a transfer protocol and a type of network that supports file sharing groups and communities. Unlike using a Torrent client, a DC client can allow you to search the files possessed and shared by other members of a community. The “community” aspect of such networks is also more literal.
A DC network is not unlike an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network. The client you use to connect to such a network requires that you connect to a specific hub, and each hub will have its own rules and procedures. It is possible and often necessary to chat with other users and develop working relationships with them to arrange file trades. Transfers don’t directly involve the hub server and take place between specific users, however this, as the name suggests, involves direct connections rather than a downloader drawing on a variety of seeds as in other peer-to-peer systems.
File Sharing and Peer-to-peer networks have a dubious reputation. In one sense, they are the underground of the Internet. They are sharing mediums and are not in themselves libraries. Exactly what is being shared is determined by the actual users and there is, of course, no way to make a blanket statement about the legality of the kinds of transfers that take place. There are, however, plenty of legitimate and legal reasons to want to share files. Such networks are popular among collectors of all sorts, whether it of music or freeware. Plenty of new bands like the publicity that comes with freely distributed songs. For that matter, plenty of big-name bands recognize that their profits come from playing shows and are happy their music is being listened to regularly, however it happens. In any event, one of the interesting things about a Direct Connect network is precisely the fact that each hub is its own little world, isolated from the rest of the Internet. That means that they can be governed closely by their users and rules can be enforced much more easily, making it entirely possible to start a file sharing network that suits your moral code, and the legal code. It is possible to connect two hubs to expand a network, and this certainly has advantages, but such practices are not a given.
Whatever your reasons for wanting to take part in or maintain a Direct Connect network, the first step in building a network is having a hub hosted. You can do this in your own home, but the large volume of traffic involved will probably exceed the capabilities of home user accounts issued by Internet Service Providers. DC Hub Hosting, because of its unique nature, is the kind of thing that usually involves a specialized service provider.
