If you’ve ever experimented with running multiple operating systems, then you’ve probably heard about Partition Magic. If you want to give yourself the option of running two operating systems on a computer, then you’ll need to have them in isolated partitions or you will be risking all kinds of conflicts and headaches. Usually, creating a partition on a hard disk would require formatting the disk. This, of course, can be a huge hassle. It would mean that you need to backup all your files and programs before you can create a new partition unless you had the foresight to do so when you initially setup your computer. As most people tend to try running a second operating system when they’ve encountered a compatibility problem with a program they use, most people won’t have planned for the eventuality. Symantec’s Partition Magic allows you to create and adjust partitions on the fly to accommodate any needs you might have whether for software or security issues. Server Magic, though an entirely different program made for server operators, has a similar basic purpose.
What sets Server Magic apart is that it allows you to adjust partitions whenever you want to but it is designed, as the name suggests, for use with servers. A home user may think that the world ends when there is a problem with their computer, but when your entire business depends on the data on your drives, the world almost literally does come crashing down around you when there is a problem with one of your machines. Any program that you use to manage your server(s) storage architecture will need to be very reliable. If it causes errors or corrupts data it can potentially cause unacceptable downtime and lost profits.
Partition-adjusting software is primarily used by web hosting companies that specialize in or support virtual hosting. Virtual hosting, the practice of maintaining multiple website and domain names using one physical server, often requires that the data and file structure for multiple sites be stored on one disk and in isolation from the other sites also being hosted. Naturally, without the right software for managing partitions, maintaining virtual hosting service would be a headache. That said, anyone running a server, for any reason, may benefit from partition management software.
Server Magic has gone through several versions, each upgrading its capabilities and security features and it is still a popularly used program that can be downloaded from various sources. That said, it is important to note that the makers of server magic no longer support the program and have discontinued development and updates. You can still get a lot of use out the program, but most businesses that rely on the stability of their systems for the continued existence tend to make the move to professional products that still come with some kind of support from their producers. Even the best program can become obsolete as the technology changes and they are no longer interfacing with hardware and system environments for which they were designed.
