An image hosting URL, the functional end of an image hosting service, is an invaluable tool that has many applications. An image host, very simply, provides space in which to store image files so that you can access them remotely or disseminate them over the Internet.

To use such a service, all you have to do is upload an image to their servers. This can often be done directly through your web browser. Once uploaded, the images will be accessible from what we can call an image hosting URL. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator and this can be entered directly into a web browser in order to access the file. URLs and Domains are sometimes confused, probably because a domain name will typically form part of a URL, but the difference is that a URL is what allows you to access specific files or resources stored on the server of a given domain.

One of the most basic uses of an image hosting service is that it allows people to publish their photos or images online and then share them. This is especially useful when you want to share images that are too large to be conveniently sent by e-mail. People can send their friends the URL that will locate their stored photos and they can then be accessed at any time without bogging down mail servers or lowering the quality of the image to reduce its containing file to a manageable size.

There are many free services out there that will allow you to publish photos. One of the most famous is flickr.com, which also provides a kind of social networking aspect to the service, but there many others. Some charge fees, but will be free of advertising and may offer more advanced options.

If you’re a blogger or operating a small-scale website, image hosting services may be extremely valuable to you. The storage space and bandwidth capacity that can be eaten up by storing the images directly on your site’s server can be significant. For many people, embedding and image hosting URL into their site’s code in order to display the image can be much more practical. You won’t have as much control, but the costs of bandwidth and storage space can be deferred onto the image hosting service which, even if it isn’t free, maybe be more cost effective.

Depending on the services offered by an image host, and the services you are willing to pay for, you can utilize an image host in different ways. Many hosts will allow you to imbed the image on your site, even when the actual data is stored on their servers. When people look at your site they will still see the image because the code will instruct the browser to load that particular file from the image host’s server. The costs of this kind of deferral will vary depending on the size and quantity of the images you want to display. Naturally, the larger the file sizes and the more files, the higher the costs. There will be a tipping point when it will become more cost effective to host the files on your own servers rather than using an independent host, but image hosting URLs can be a godsend to webmasters just starting out.
