If you want to store and distribute files remotely there are a lot of different services available out there that can help you accomplish your goals. Looking for a good data file host might be a great start, especially if your needs are fairly modest.
A data file host operates much the same way as an image host. They will typically allow to you setup an account and upload files that you can then access or distribute using a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). There are plenty of file hosting sites around and many offer free services. These are typically supported by advertising which will be displayed to anyone accessing the files you’ve made public. On top of advertising, many popular file hosts will offer premium services to clients at various costs. When a file is hosted for free, a typical setup makes the file available for download from various servers, some of which offer free downloads with queues and wait times, while others require users to pay for premium service will grant them access to immediate downloads.
File hosting services can be useful for all levels of Internet-based organizations, even large ones that usually host their own files. Major video game companies often use third-party download services to distribute critical or highly anticipated patches for popular games. Such organizations have the resources to host the files themselves, but their infrastructure isn’t necessarily to handle spikes in traffic volume beyond certain parameters. When an anticipated file is first released the high volume of users trying to download the file simultaneously can tax resources, bogging down servers, making the files unreachable to many surfers and causing general frustration. Distributing the file through various third-party hosts can help overcome temporary problems caused by rushes.
File Planet is a good example of an organization that capitalizes on the need to distribute files to large numbers of users. While file hosting is only one of the organization’s many services, symbiotic relationships with game companies allows it to draw lots of traffic. They are also a good example of the how file hosting can provide a valuable service for online communities. Individual users can upload game mods and other files that add to online game play.
If you are operating a small website and using a hosting service that charges based on traffic volume or caps bandwidth, hosting a file yourself, especially a popular one, can become problematic. File hosting services will typically allow you to embed a link to the file on your website that redirects surfers to the download service. That means that people will still come to your site looking for the file in question, but the bandwidth they occupy while downloading will be deferred to the third party service.
