What is VPS Hosting?

VPS Hosting (Virtual Private Server) is a kind of hosting where a server is partitioned to simulate a dedicated server.  This is a lower cost option when compared to dedicated servers, and is without a doubt superior and more independent than shared hosting plans.

Each partitioned VPS runs it’s own operating system, has it’s own bandwidth and disk space.  Each partition can even be rebooted independently of the others.  VPS provides a cost-effective alternative to dedicated servers if your budget is a little tight.

I am looking to start a website that will basically be a daily sports blog. I would like to add video as well and have it load quickly. In time I hope to have plenty of traffic and advertise for other companies on my site. One site that I would like to compete with or somewhat simulate would be http://www.profootballtalk.com What type of hosting would you recommend for this? I was thinking VPS with wordpress.

Thank you!

Hi Brian,

Sounds like you’re on the right track. I guess it all depends how quickly you expect all this traffic to come in. If you’re expecting a good deal of traffic soon after starting up, VPS is probably the right choice for your new site but keep in mind that VPS hosting will likely not suit your needs as your site starts to grow in popularity. I would get some VPS hosting from a host that offers some room to grow, that way you can move to dedicated server hosting once you outgrow the VPS plan and start generating some revenue. But you’re right that VPS will allow you to keep the cost lower during your startup phase, which can make or break a new site.

The Goodhost.org team is a big fan of Wordpress, so in our opinion you can’t really go wrong there. We use it and are really happy with it, we are using the “Thesis” theme which can be found at http://diythemes.com/.

Hope that helps!
