What is “Shared Hosting”?

in Budget Hosting, Hosting Terminology, Uncategorized

Shared Hosting is a form of budget hosting where multiple websites are stored on the same server.  This allows the web host to cut costs and provide service to customers at a drastically reduced rate (somewhere in the $4.95/mo range).  Most Shared Hosting is provided on the Linux platform due to the low cost of the open source operating system, although some Budget Hosts are now starting to offer Windows-based hosting.  The system works by splitting the operating costs over many users, the draw-backs to this type of service is less reliability and potential security issues.  Just Remember - you get what you pay for!

The two basic types of Shared Hosting are:

Name-based Virtual Hosting / Shared IP Hosting

With Name-Based / Shared IP Hosting, the virtual host stores multiple hostnames on the same machine - each site on the shared machine actually has the same IP Address.  The name of the site is used to distinguish between one site an the other - so when a browser requests a page from a site it includes the site name information so the host knows which site to show the user.  The disadvantage to this is that sites using the same IP address must share the same Digital Certificate (Shared Certificate) and cannot have it’s own SSL Certificate.

IP-Based Virtual Hosting / Dedicated IP Hosting

IP-Based Virtual Hosting / Dedicated IP Hosting is similar to it’s Name-Based equivalent, the difference being that each virtual host has a different IP address.  So rather than using the hostname to determine which site to show the user, the individual IP address is used.  The main benefit of IP-Based over Name-Based is that the IP-Based site can have it’s own Digital Certificate since it does not share it’s IP with another site.
