Reseller Hosting is a type of web hosting that allows the account holder to purchase a certain amount of bandwidth and disk space wholesale, the client can then divide and resell to other people for profit. The client then becomes a web hosting company themselves. Depending on the reseller, they may have a dedicated server or simply be re-selling a certain allotment of shared hosting service. If they are providing shared service, they may simply be reselling a certain amount of bandwidth and disk space from their shared reseller hosting account.
Although the reseller may have to respond to their own customer base in the form of customer/technical support, technical issues are generally forwarded to the original service provider for a resolution. The reseller therefore has little need for extensive technical expertise in web hosting to be able to offer hosting services themselves.
Running your own web hosting company sounds relatively easy, however the industry is quite overcrowded - making it potentially difficult and costly to advertise your new web hosting brand. Often reselling is most practical when offered as an add-on to another service where you have an existing customer base. An example of this would be a web designer offering hosting services as an add-on to their website designs.
