Types of Blogs

There are many types of blogs out there, each one with their own community of followers.  Over the last few years, blogs of various types have appeared to appeal to various interests and tastes.  No matter who you are - chances are that there is something in the blogosphere for you.

Here are a few of them along with some quality examples to give you an idea.

Editorial Blog: One type of News blog is the editorial-type blogs by individuals seeking to create an alternative to traditional mass media, or to simply provide a different perspective.  As an example, check out the Huffington Post.

News Blog: The other type of News blogs are created by more established (or traditional) news sources to compliment their existing corporate newspaper, magazine, or news broadcasts.  There are many of these type out there, to find some of interest - check out Politico.com.

Online Diary Blog: Online Diary blogs are a sort of running monologue following the life, experiences, opinions, and current interests of a particular author.  These blogs can be quite interesting, (depending on the author) and can also be quite intimate - allowing readers to get to know the blogger and see life through their eyes.  As an example, check out the Click Opera Blog.

Photo Blog: Photo Blogs (as the name suggests) are blogs dedicated to photography, rather than having a focus on text - this type of blog includes regular entries of different photos. A good example of this is the Sartorialist Blog.

Sketch Blog: Sketch Blogs are dedicated to visual art - like drawing and painting.  If you are interested in art, sketch blogs are a great place to share and critique a number of works of art.  A great example of sketch blogs is ’skine.art.

Video Blog (or vlog): A vlog is a type of blog that is almost entirely in the form of short videos.  These videos are often distributed, not only on their own site - but also on assorted video sites like youtube.  A good example of this is the internet news vlog called Rocketboom.

These are only a few examples, there are many more - one of the greatest things about blogs is that each one is as individual as the author.  Another great thing is that anyone can start a blog, you can either start a free blog on a blog site like Blogger or host your own blog if you prefer.
