What is Green Hosting? It seems like everywhere I look these days, people are talking about going green and saving the planet. Finally it seems like the extreme competitiveness of the web hosting market has driven a number of hosting companies to go green in an attempt to attract green customers. Whatever the reason, it seems like a step in the right direction and I personally welcome any attempt at carbon offsetting - despite how gimmicky it may appear.
If you’re looking to choose a hosting company based on it’s shade of green, here are a few things being offered by a number hosts competing for the green hosting market.
Alternative power sources: Some hosts are powering their servers on renewable energy. For example: Thinkhost.com claims to be powered entirely by wind and solar power.
Carbon-Neutral Hosting Accounts: A number of hosts offer you the opportunity to host your site with 100% carbon-neutral service.
Tree Planting: It’s becoming more and more common that hosting companies plant a tree for every new customer that signs-up.
Paperless Environment: Hosting companies claiming to run a work environment that is completely paper-less and 100% electronic.
Endorsement by Green Organizations: Some hosts are being certified as environmentally friendly by non-profit organizations like Co-op America.
I’m also hearing some talk about DC power technology being applied to data center systems. A company called Rackable Systems claims to have devised a power solution that not only improves reliability - but also decreases power consumption by about 20%. This is the future of authentic green hosting IMHO.
