How to find the owner of a domain

In some cases it may become useful to be able to find the owner of a domain. This comes in handy if you want to contact the domain owner to network your site (ask for links), make an offer to purchase a site, or when doing competitive research for your own site. You may even want to see what information other users can access about you and your site.

There is a service called “Whois” that can provide the information you’re looking for. This service is available from several sites, one of the most popular is Domaintools. This service puts the domain information at your fingertips, just type in the domain in question (without the “www”) and if the domain already exists you’ll see all the public information available.

Some of the most relevant information available includes the creation date, last update, domain expiration date, name of owner, contact information (phone and email), hosting service name, domain registrar… etc.
