How to Avoid Downtime on Your Website?

Nervous about downtime? There are so many different budget hosts out there, each of them now offering “unlimited bandwidth” - but how can your average consumer realistically hold any hosting company to this claim?

Does this mean you can rest easy?

If you’ve chosen a Shared Hosting “unlimited bandwidth” service, you may be surprised one day to find your site is unexpectedly offline. Why is this? Unlimited bandwidth plans can be fine if you’re planning to put up a simple personal site/blog with modest traffic - chances are you won’t need to be picky when it comes to a hosting plan. But what happens when your blog post gets to the first page of Digg or Reddit and suddenly your site is bombarded with unexpected traffic? The answer - your site could be temporarily offlined.

You see, when you clicked the “I agree” box during the sign-up process for your budget “unlimited” hosting plan - the small print states that your host has the right to temporarily offline your site if the site exceeds a certain percentage of the host’s central processing unit capacity. So just when your site “makes it big”, you could be in for a nasty wake up call.

As a consumer it’s important to understand your needs and what services are available to host your site. So if you’re planning to make it big on the web, do yourself a favor and avoid “unlimited” hosting deals and opt for a dedicated server plan.

For those of you wanting a reliable service, offering a hosting service that can meet your high-traffic needs - or for those who are reselling, take a look at our assessment of Mosso Hosting.
